Recycling centres in Ghana

16 July 2013

Many people in the world have seen images and videos taken at Agbogbloshie, in Accra, Ghana. This is a 'recycling centre' of sorts, but leaves much to be desired. Though the people there work very hard to earn a minimal living, they are doing so at the cost of their own health, the health of other people, and the environment. This website should illustrate that it can all be done much better, much more sustainable. There is at least one other company in Ghana that deals with e-scrap, and in a much more responsible way. City Waste Management (CWM) has been working on a pilot scale near Kwabenya, but are busy constructing a new location along the road to Pokuase, immediately North of Accra. CWM have agreements in place with the Ghana EPA and with various European partners. While the company is still scaling up to full capacity, they already are the only company approved in Ghana to recycle refrigeration equipment, extracting the gases and oils, dismantling the units into different components and metals, and shipping these to Europe.

Watch this space to see where City Waste Management sets up shop and how they start operating at full scale.
