E-waste is an opportunity! But requires implementation of laws.

The linkedĀ report by a UN Working Group, after a visit to Ghana in July, 2013, also addresses the "harm from e-waste recycling", at Agbogbloshie, even if only on pages 8 and 9.

It unfortunately takes the traditional "problematic" view, rather than the "opportunity" view... Doesn't mention the current efforts by a more professional recycling company, points a finger at Europe for being a source, not mentioning that Ghanaians are importing as much as Europeans (and Ghanaians in Europe) are exporting, and not realising that professional recycling is a profitable business elsewhere, and could also be one in Ghana.

A single comment that the government should ensure the sector is regulated locally, is simply not enough.

The absence of regulation, the absence of implementation of existing laws, and the fact that a new law has been in draft form for more than 18 months now (but has disappeared from sight), is one of the major obstacles to attract foreign investment and technology into this industry.
